TB Scholars will spend approximately 400 hours in a SEATRAC-affiliated lab on a TB project. These hours may be completed intensively as a summer experience. Accepted applicants will receive a stipend, up to $4000 for full-time summer experience. TB Scholars will also participate in a regular small group series where students meet with faculty and discuss topics in TB, published papers, and have career path discussions.

eligibility criteria

The program is open to undergraduate students who demonstrate academic excellence and are from groups who have been historically underrepresented in medicine and/or have lived experience overcoming significant adversity, whether due to prejudice, discrimination, geographical, social, physical, economic, or other factors. For example, students who are from disadvantaged backgrounds  or recognized as historically underrepresented  by race and gender in the health and science professions including: Black/African American, Hispanic/LatinX, American Indian, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, or Pacific Islander. Applicants should be strongly motivated to pursue a career in the sciences. 

Eligibility Criteria:

1. Academic excellence

2. Currently an undergraduate student in the greater Seattle area

3. Interest in a career in science and/or medicine

4.  Specific interest in tuberculosis is welcome, but not required

Application materials are accepted twice per year. The next round of applications is due March 1, 2024. Accepted applicants will be informed during Spring Quarter and begin TBSP in Summer 2024

Submit the following to seatrac@uw.edu:

  • Completed TBSP application form.
  • Letter of Recommendation (1). Please provide one letter of recommendation from a professor or instructor. Although no previous research experience is required, a letter from a research mentor is welcome if available.
  • CV/Resume
  • Undergrad transcript (or high school transcript if applying as an incoming, undergraduate student)
  • Proof of undergraduate enrollment if first-year undergraduate student (copy or screenshot of class schedule)
  • Personal statement (total 250-500 words) addressing the following
    • Describe your career goals and how a research experience in a health profession addressing infectious disease (TB, COVID, HIV/AIDS) research augments your plans.
    • One of the goals of this scholarship is to foster diversity. Briefly describe your background and career path with regards to opportunities and life experiences that are related to individual, institutional, and societal diversity.
