TB-HIV Training Program (TBHTP)
An NIH D43 grant entitled “Tuberculosis & HIV Co-Infection Training Program in Kenya (TBHTP)”, led by MPIs Tom Hawn (AID, DGH), Elizabeth Obimbo (University of Nairobi & UW DGH), and Videlis Nduba (Kenya Medical Research Institute), along with Assistant Directors David Horne (PCCS, DGH) and Sylvia LaCourse (AID, DGH) outlines a new training program in TB-HIV co-infection research. The TBHTP seeks to enhance training and local capacity building of the next generation of leaders in Kenya who will discover novel research and public health strategies to combat the dual TB-HIV epidemic. The TBHTP is led by members of the TB Research and Training Center (TRTC) and the Kenya TB Research and Training Program.
The TBHTP will increase the capacity of the University of Nairobi (UoN) and KEMRI to conduct HIV-TB co-infection research. The TBHTP will implement a long-term training degree-earning track, a medium-term training non-degree track, and a short-term training track that will offer workshops and online courses.
1. Long-term training degree-earning track: This program will build upon the highly successful and proven approach to Fogarty-funded research training by the UW in Kenya that has been in place for over 30 years. This track will support trainees who wish to pursue an MPH or Master’s degree in Epidemiology, Health Services, or Biomedical and Health Informatics in Seattle at UW or a PhD at the University of Nairobi that will include co-mentoring by UW faculty. The first round of application for the TBHTP UoN PhD program are due October 15, 2021 and details are described in the attachments below.

In addition, advanced training will also be available at UoN through a Fellowship in Epidemiology, a 2 year course of advanced training in epidemiology at UoN. This fellowship offers an alternative to a PhD at UoN. Applicants will already have a Master’s in Medicine and be seeking to advance their research skills and training.

2. Medium-term training non-degree track: The medium-term track offers an opportunity for KEMRI and UoN faculty who wish to pursue research in a UW laboratory and engage in a mentored research proposal in Kenya. The Medium-term Training Track also contains distance learning classes from the UW that will also be required of Long-term Training Track trainees and highly recommended to all trainees associated with this D43 (and open to interested faculty).
The TBHTP Medium Track is a 12 month program that includes: course work in Epidemiology (either online through University of Washington or at the University of Nairobi, mentorship for a TB-HIV research project (typically a secondary analyses), manuscript writing course (University of Nairobi), and Advanced TB Research Training Course online from the University of Washington. Participants who successfully complete the medium track will receive a certificate.

The TBHTP Selection Committee will review complete application materials and make decisions. The selection committee will not review incomplete or late applications. 3. Short-term training non-degree track: Short-term trainees may be KEMRI, NTLLD-P, NASCOP, other Kenyan public health or research institution employees, or work with one of these organizations on an HIV/TB related program project or research study. Short-term in-country training will consist of short-term courses in Nairobi that allow trainees to learn new research skills and interact with other researchers and health officials responsible for HIV/TB healthcare delivery. All courses and workshops will be conducted by a collaborative team of UW, KEMRI and UoN Core Faculty. Details on available courses, beginning January 2022, coming soon.
